Depression has becoming an increasingly common affliction in our modern, stressful society. Just how does depression happen and what can we do about it. Perhaps one of the biggest obstacles in treating depression is recognizing the signs and symptoms of depression. Often, people have a hard time believing they have depression with friends and families being unable to provide the support and help to the person suffering in silence.
Depression can have severe effects on a person's life, both personally and professionally as the illness often takes over the patients' life in a literal sense. Also, when someone says they are "feeling depressed", it is often taken to mean a temporary state of unhappiness when in fact, they are unable to lift themselves out of the pits of depression.
Sometimes, people who are depressed do not really feel sad at all. Rather, they feel a sense of apathy and feel that everything is meaningless to them. That is why sometimes physical symptoms of depression escape family and friends.
